A little bit of magic

I love doing CJ’s online photography courses and this current one is no exception. Entitled Advanced Artistry it’s the first one that goes beyond the actual taking of the photograph into the post production arena. I already love using Photoshop and have been muddling along happily with it for the past three years or so. Tomorrow marks the submission deadline for module 1 and already I have learnt loads. I’ve leant the ‘smart’ way of making slight adjustments that can really improve a shot. I know the jury is divided on post production - it can’t make a truly rubbish photo better but it can give good ones the wow factor as well as sometimes saving that special memory that you think is lost in that blurred/dark/over exposed image that’s the only one you have of that particular day. A number of my examples included prom shots which you’ll already have seen in my earlier post but here’s one I took of Grumpy the day after the prom with the required back lighting provided by an obliging period of sunshine.

Hopefully you can see the subtle differences that the post production has made. I must admit that I sometime struggle to ‘see’ it myself. I can do all that work and then look back at the original and think, hmm – perhaps I like the SOOC better.

So which do you prefer?

Thanks for dropping by and please feel free to leave me a comment.

I can see a difference, definitely. I think a class like this could be exactly what a need to get me out of complete beginner mode. I'm looking forward to seeing what else you learn

Yup - the adjusted one is better. I'd have been quite happy with the SOC one, but the processing has added warmth and light and is just better!

Thanks for the info on IKEA Goddess - am trawling through her blog list now :D

I like both pictures :) but I can see what you've done to the edited one, and I like how the light reflects off your daughters hair with more colour. :)

Those slight adjustments really have made a big difference.

I do think she has a much better skin tone in the adjusted version!
